When you are surfing on the internet you‘ll see RSS feeds everywhere. For those who don’t know what it is, I’ll give you the definition in Wikipedia:
An RSS document, which is called a “feed,” “web feed,” or “channel,” contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that’s easier than checking them manually.
Of course I am a fan of RSS feeds. Every day I read at least ten articles by way of my Google Reader.
Although we have started this blog in January we already have several subscribers on our feed. Have you subscribed yet. No, just click on the following link. Online marketing news, tips and tutorials by Yargon. You will receive all new articles from Yargon in your RSS reader. Naturally, this is completely free.
When you want to use RSS as an active marketing tool on your website you have to optimize your RSS feed. I’ll give you four tips how to optimize your RSS feed.
- Use more than one feed and organize them in categories. Now subscribers can choose those articles they really like. So, this will reduce the chance they will unsubscribe.
- Don’t use codes for statistics in your feed. In Feedburner you can activate advanced statistics. Only this has a disadvantage. In this particular case the URL in the feed to your original article is a redirect by way of Feedburner. So when other people put your feed on their website you don’t have the advantage of an extra link. An extra link is good for search engine optimization. So you miss this opportunity.
- Google Sitemaps supports RSS feeds. This means when you can’t make a XML Sitemap you can apply for a RSS feed.
- Support your visitors to subscribe for your RSS feed. Especially when you don’t publish a newsletter the RSS feed is a great alternative.
