Standing out in someone’s bookmarks

March 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Bookmarks / favouritesMost online marketing blogs and websites discuss how to attract new visitors. But what about the visitors who already know your website? How do you get them to visit your website again?

One way is via the bookmarks in the visitor’s browser. With bookmarks you can easily save and find interesting website. You probably use them yourself.

However not every visitor takes the time to add your website to his bookmarks. We therefore have to help them a little bit…

Creating an “add to bookmarks” link to on your website
We firstr want to create an “add to bookmarks” link to your website. When a visitor clicks on that link your website will automatically be added to his bookmarks.

To create this link you have to add the following code to your website somewhere on you page (wherever you want the link to appear):

<a href=”javascript:window.external.AddFavorite(’http://www.web-address.com’,’Short description)”>Add this website to your bookmarks</a>

Of course you replace “web-address” with your domain and “short description” with a short description about your website (not more then 35 characters). Little tip: Bookmarks are often displayed alphabetical ;-).

Note: This link will only work for visitors using Internet Explorer!

Standing out in the bookmarks
Most visitors have bookmarked a huge list of websites. Therefore it’s crucial to stand out.

You probably noticed that some website have a little icon before the url in the address bar. This icon is called a favicon (FAVourites ICON). The image below shows you how a favicon look like:

Example of favicon

The favicon is also shown in the bookmarks. Since most websites don’t use a favicon creating one is a perfect way to stand out in the bookmarks.

How to add a favicon to your website
A favicon is an image from 16×16 pixels. We first have to create that little icon. You can use your website’s logo or an image which relates to your website/subject.

An easy way of creating a favicon is via http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/. You simple upload an image and this website will instantly create a favicon (16×16 pixels). You then save this file as: favicon.ico (watch the .ico extension!) en upload it to the root of your server.

The last step is to add the following code between the header tags (<head> </head>) of your pages:

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”http://www.website-address.com/favicon.ico”>

Change “website-address” with yours. Voila! When you go to your website you will see you favicon in the address bar!

Conclusion
Visitors can now easily ad your website to his bookmarks. And because most websites don’t use a favicon yours will stand out with a beautiful favicon!

Share and Enjoy: These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages.
