Never write welcome on your site

March 13th, 2008 · No Comments

I see a lot of companies. In most companies, I do feel myself very welcome. A nice and friendly receptionist with a smile on her face who brings me a cup of coffee. A nice place to sit, great magazines while you are waiting, etc.

I also surf a lot on the web and I see there a lot of companies too. I often see “Welcome to this site”. When I see this text I don’t feel myself welcome automatically. Mostly I don’t even read it, I just click further. In other words the text “welcome to our site” has no use at all.

The question is: Does the text “Welcome to our site” harm your conversion?

The answer is: Yes it is wrong it will harm your conversion!! This means you shouldn’t start your homepage with “welcome” for the following reasons:

SEO

It is better to write the title of your page in stead of welcome. Write the title in your header in H1. You will influence the search engines in a positive direction.

Title-tag

I often see “welcome” in the title-tag. This really isn’t a smart thing to do because the search engines won’t stimulate visitors to go to your website. It is wiser to use a “call-to-action” or another trigger to attract visitors to your website.

No Use

The word welcome on your homepage has no use. Visitors who read “welcome” are on you site already. Of course they are welcome. This text uses only expensive space above the fold.

Summary

Don’t write “welcome to our site” on your homepage.
